Nuneaton Co-op Hall

Built in 1938 by the Nuneaton Co-operative Society, which at the time was a very successful local enterprise with over 19 thousand members. The Art Deco Co-op Hall, in Queens Road Nuneaton, was a magnificent ballroom in its early days and holds precious memories for countless courting couples in post-war Nuneaton. In its heyday it was the musical Mecca of the area. It was a glorious place where two generations of Nuneatonians met and fell in love, performing the latest dances on its wonderfully springy dance floor made of polished oak. On October 5, 1962, it played host to The Beatles, who were the support act to Tanya Day and the Vampires. The Rolling Stones rocked the venue on November 15, 1963. They played two shows that day in Nuneaton and were pelted with cream cakes by Nuneaton children. In his book 'Stone Alone', the Stones' bass player Bill Wyman tells of the earlier junior session. It was full of six to 10 year-olds who were not interested in the music and proceeded to throw their afternoon tea at the Stones! Among other bands of the 60s to play the venue were The Hollies, The Troggs, The Who and The Fortunes. The Co-op Hall was also the scene of one of the town's worst tragedies. In 1965, on New Year's Eve, four people were killed at the venue as revellers got caught up in a crush on the staircase.

Nuneaton Co-Op Hall was finally demolished in November 2008. Unfortunately, the photographs of the demolition, which were previously published here, have been withdrawn at the request of the copyright holder. If you have any photographs of the Co-op Hall or of its demolition that you would allow us to use please contact the webmaster
